Yajang: Korea’s Outdoor Drinking Culture in Insadong

What Is Yajang? Korea’s Outdoor Drinking Scene

“Yajang” (야장) literally means an outdoor field or open-air seating, and in modern Korea it has become shorthand for drinking under the open sky — plastic stools, low tables, and cold drinks spilling out of a bar and into the street. Unlike a formal terrace, a yajang is casual and communal: strangers sit shoulder to shoulder, the city hums around you, and the boundary between the bar and the neighborhood disappears.

In Insadong, where narrow hanok alleys are lined with lanterns and string lights, the yajang experience is especially magical. As the evening cools, tables appear along the alley and the whole lane turns into one long, relaxed party.

Why Dalmakdalmak’s Yajang Is Special

Dalmakdalmak is best known for its yajang. On a fine evening, our outdoor tables in the Insadong alley fill up before the indoor seats do — they are the first thing regulars ask for. You get a front-row view of the lane, the glow of our crescent-moon sign overhead, and the easy buzz of people sharing jeon and makgeolli.

There is something uniquely Korean about eating a sizzling seafood pajeon outdoors, pouring makgeolli into a ceramic bowl, and watching Insadong drift by. It is unpretentious, warm, and exactly the kind of night people travel across the city for.

How to Enjoy a Yajang Night

Come as the sun sets — that golden hour just before dark is the best time to claim an outdoor table. Order a couple of jeon to share, pick a makgeolli (our staff will happily recommend one), and settle in. Weather permitting, yajang seating runs all evening until close at midnight.

Yajang seats are first-come, first-served and go quickly on weekends and warm nights, so arriving a little early is the surest way to get one. Find us right by Anguk Station Exit 6, in the heart of Insadong.
