A First-Timer’s Guide to Korean Bars

A Korean bar — often called a “suljip” (술집) — is less about cocktails and more about food, drink, and company. You sit down, order dishes to share, and settle in for a relaxed night of anju and alcohol. It is casual, lively, and welcoming, even if you have never been to one.

How to Order

Order anju (drinking food) for the table rather than individual plates — two or three dishes for a group is normal, and you add more as the night goes. Choose your drink to match: makgeolli with jeon, soju with spicy or grilled dishes, beer with fried food.

Don’t worry about getting it perfect. Tell the staff what you like and they will guide you — recommending dishes and pouring the right makgeolli for your table.

What to Try First

If it is your first visit, start with a signature jeon and a bowl of makgeolli — the classic Korean bar experience. From there, add a bulgogi or a spicy anju and a second drink to keep the table interesting.

Dalmakdalmak is an easy place to start, one minute from Anguk Station Exit 6 in Insadong, open daily from 3 PM to midnight.
