First Time Drinking in Korea? Start Here
Korean drinking culture is warm, social, and easy to love once you know a few basics. You do not need to speak Korean or know the etiquette perfectly — but a little context makes your first night far more fun. Here is the short version for visitors.
A Few Simple Customs
Pour for others, not yourself, and use two hands when pouring or receiving from someone older as a sign of respect. When an elder or host toasts, a light clink and a “geonbae!” (cheers) does the trick. It is polite to turn slightly away when taking your first sip in formal company — but among friends, anything goes.
Most importantly, drinking always comes with anju (food). Order dishes to share and pace yourself; the goal is good conversation, not speed.
What to Order Your First Time
Keep it classic: a plate of jeon with a bowl of makgeolli is the perfect introduction. If you prefer something familiar, our bacon cheese jeon is an easy favorite, and a crisp beer pairs well. Curious about soju? Try it with our gochujang bulgogi.
Come practice at Dalmakdalmak — a friendly Korean bar one minute from Anguk Station Exit 6, where our staff is always happy to guide first-timers. Open daily 3 PM to midnight.
